Rose Spider and Inchworm Beginning of the End

Emily Stacy Matthiessen began her study of photography in the high desert of southeastern Arizona at Cochise College. At that time, her eye (and her lens) was focussed on people. By the time she graduated from Evergreen State College in the temperate rainforest of Washington, her work had evolved to encompass a much wider range of subjects, especially scenes from the natural world.

She began to focus on plants as she accompanied a team of naturalists who were researching a book on the ecosystems of the Olympic Peninsula. Making photographic records of their botanist crawls afforded her the time and opportunity to actually see details she'd missed before while hiking at a more rapid pace...

Flowers--their varieties, colors, and forms--attracted her and touched her at a deep level. She made a connection and began to see them and photograph them everywhere...in the wild, in gardens and beside the roads and waters.

Later, on the high plains of South Dakota, while studying a marigold, she noticed a small drama unfolding. Among the red and yellow petals, the last remains of an insect were jerking about in an odd manner. Closer observation revealed a spider whose color and form was masterfully-matched to the marigold. It was consuming the hapless fellow.

This accidental discovery propelled her to investigate and record the insect world and to celebrate the relationships between insects and plants.
